Exploring Shakespearean Tragedy through Indian Poetics | Teacher’s Day 2026

🌸 Introduction:

Literature becomes more meaningful when we approach it through different intellectual and cultural lenses. Shakespeare’s Othello is a powerful tragedy of love, trust, suspicion, jealousy, and moral downfall. Indian poetics, particularly the concepts of Bhāva and Rasa, provides another way of understanding these emotional movements.

This digital academic activity explores Othello through the central conceptual movement of Uttamaprakṛti → Śaṅkā → Adhamaprakṛti, connecting Shakespearean tragedy with Indian aesthetic thought.

The activity is also part of Teacher’s Day 2026 and has been designed as a practical component of the SEC Paper – Digital Skilling for Literature Students, combining literary interpretation with digital learning tools.

Why This Topic?

Othello is not only a story of jealousy; it is a psychological journey.

At the beginning, Othello is presented as a character associated with love, trust, dignity, and emotional commitment. Gradually, Iago introduces Śaṅkā (doubt/suspicion) into Othello’s mind. This suspicion transforms his emotional world and eventually contributes to destructive actions.

Through the movement from Uttamaprakṛti to Śaṅkā to Adhamaprakṛti, this activity attempts to understand how a character’s emotional and psychological condition can transform within a tragedy.

 Love and trust → Śaṅkā → Jealousy → Destructive action → Tragic recognition

This is a comparative interpretation rather than a claim that Shakespeare consciously followed Indian Rasa theory.

Digital Skilling for Literature Students

As part of the SEC Paper – Digital Skilling for Literature Students, this activity moves beyond conventional textual study.

The literary text is explored through:

The heart of this academic activity is the movement:

UTTAMAPRAKṚTI → ŚAṄKĀ → ADHAMAPRAKṚTI

🌱 Uttamaprakṛti

The initial stage represents Othello's comparatively elevated emotional disposition—his love, trust, dignity, and commitment to Desdemona.

🌫️ Śaṅkā

Śaṅkā, or doubt/suspicion, becomes the crucial psychological turning point. Iago manipulates Othello by planting uncertainty about Desdemona's fidelity.

🔥 Adhamaprakṛti

The final stage represents the deterioration of Othello's emotional control and moral judgement as suspicion and jealousy increasingly dominate his actions.

Thus, the tragedy can be read as a movement from an elevated emotional disposition toward psychological disturbance and destructive behaviour.

 Othello's Emotional Transformation

Othello's tragedy becomes particularly significant when viewed as a process rather than a single emotion.

Love establishes emotional attachment.

Trust creates security.

Śaṅkā introduces uncertainty.

Jealousy intensifies the suspicion.

Anger and emotional disturbance affect judgement.

Destructive action produces the tragic crisis.

Recognition arrives with devastating consequences.

This movement demonstrates how literature can be studied not only through plot and character but also through psychological and aesthetic experience.

 From Bhāva to Rasa

Indian aesthetic theory provides a valuable framework for examining how emotions operate within literary and dramatic experience.

In Othello, emotions do not remain isolated. They interact, develop, and transform as the narrative progresses.

The emotional world of the play can therefore be explored through:

Vibhāva → Anubhāva → Vyabhicāribhāva → Sthāyibhāva → Rasa

Within this framework, Śaṅkā becomes especially important as a transitory emotional state that contributes to the development of the tragic emotional experience.

The purpose is not to force every element of Othello into one-to-one correspondence with Sanskrit poetics, but to discover what becomes visible when the play is read through another aesthetic tradition.

💡 What This Digital Skilling Activity Taught Me

This project helped me understand that digital skilling is not separate from literature.

A literature student can use technology not merely to present information but to create meaningful academic experiences.

While working on Othello, I learned to connect:

Literature + Theory + Interpretation + Technology + Teaching

The process also made me look at Othello differently—not simply as a tragic hero consumed by jealousy, but as a character whose emotional journey can be examined through changing psychological and aesthetic states 

 Preserving Literary Knowledge Through New Forms

Classical theories and Shakespearean texts belong to different literary traditions, yet digital platforms allow us to bring them into productive dialogue.

By using videos, presentations, interactive lessons, quizzes, and certificates, literary knowledge can move beyond the printed page without losing its academic value.

The past is not replaced by technology; it is reinterpreted through it.

Conclusion

Othello presents a complex journey through love, trust, suspicion, jealousy, violence, and recognition. Through the Indian aesthetic lens of Uttamaprakṛti, Śaṅkā, and Adhamaprakṛti, the tragedy can be approached as a gradual transformation of emotional and psychological experience.

At the same time, this project demonstrates how digital tools can make literary learning more interactive, visual, reflective, and accessible.

As a Teacher's Day 2026 Academic Activity and a component of the SEC Paper – Digital Skilling for Literature Students, this project brings together literary studies and digital creativity.

 Literature gives us emotions to interpret; theory gives us lenses to understand them; digital skills give us new ways to communicate them.
